A Brief History of Uis, Namibia
Uis is a small, peaceful town located in the Erongo Region of Namibia, near the base of the iconic Brandberg Mountain, the highest peak in the country. Though quiet today, Uis has a rich and fascinating past rooted in Namibia’s mining history.
A Mining Town with a Purpose
Uis was established in the mid-1950s as a mining settlement to support the operations of the Uis Tin Mine, which was once one of the largest open-cast tin mines in the world. The mine attracted workers and families from all over, creating a close-knit and vibrant community.
During its peak in the 1970s and 1980s, Uis was a thriving town with modern facilities, including schools, sports fields, and shops — all centred around the mining industry.
A Town in Transition
After Namibia gained independence in 1990, the global price of tin dropped, and the mine eventually closed. This marked a big change for Uis, which went from a busy mining hub to a quiet desert town. Many of the original buildings still remain, and the community has stayed strong and resilient.
Over time, Uis began to focus more on tourism, crafts, and small-scale business as new sources of livelihood.
The Mining Revival – Andrada Mining
In 2018, mining in Uis experienced a revival when Andrada Mining (formerly AfriTin Mining) began operating at the historical tin mine. Their presence brought renewed energy and job opportunities to the town. In addition to tin, Andrada’s geological team discovered significant lithium deposits in the area — a key resource for the global renewable energy market.
This modern phase of mining has placed Uis back on the map as a site of strategic importance for Namibia’s growing mining sector.
A Hub for Tourism and Culture
Today, Uis is not only a mining town but also a popular destination for travellers. It serves as a gateway to Brandberg Mountain and the famous White Lady rock painting. Visitors also come to see the desert-adapted elephants that roam the nearby Ugab River region.
With its mix of history, culture, and natural beauty, Uis continues to welcome guests from around the world who want to experience its unique charm.
